Joseph Mainland nbs grad update

When I completed the NBS course I went straight into work experience at Heart Fm in Wrexham, from there I became a regular freelancer over the next year. I then had various stints at BBC radio Merseyside and Real Radio Wales. Where I covered a lot of the stations sport.

I then got my first permanaent role as a sports journalist in London at the Perform Group back in January 2011. I started as a production assistant on the news wire Omnisport, and progressed to an Assistant Producer after 8 months. I reported on the 2012 Olympics and was at the 2012 FA Cup final working as a video journalist for the company.

As well as working at Perform I’ve freelanced at ESPN and IMG Sports.Media.

My current role at Perform is in the Football department as an Assistant Producer and commentator. Part of my role is to produce the ESPN Goals previews and highlights. I’ve also built up my experience behind the camera and am regularly out and about on shoots!

The NBS course was invaulable in terms of building confidence and the determination to succeed. The course is intense and that’s exactly what the job is, intense, every minute of every day. It’s an excellent grounding for any budding journalist.
